Choosing a Water Filter for Home Use

John Rutherford - Tuesday, July 03, 2012

Everybody needs to have clean, uncontaminated water supplied to their home. Water filters ensure a healthy supply of uncontaminated water, free from toxic pollutants such as  heavy metals, chemicals, pathogens, as well as sediment and turbidity, and are a very convenient, yet effective way to purify the water you drink.

There are several kinds of water filters you can use. You can fit an individual water filter onto a single tap, or onto a number of taps within the home to provide filtered water from those units. Some water filters are specially designed to process large volumes of water as the water flows into the home from the water mains, and are the recommended choice if you are wishing to filter all the water that enters your home. As the filter system is installed on the water mains entering the home, it ensures that every drop of water that comes out from your taps or showers is pure and filtered. Because these filters are larger, and process larger volumes of water, they are more expensive than smaller filters that can only provide filtered water from the tap on which it is installed.

Before you purchase a drinking water filter for your home, it is best to consider the number of people in the household. If your family is small, then a small water filter will do. This is cost efficient since larger water filters can be expensive. For larger households, or those that receive frequent guests, a larger water filter will be more efficient at supplying fresh drinking water to family and friends.

Portable Water Filters

Counter top filters are more versatile than under sink filters, and can be moved around easily. Specially designed portable units are lightweight and small and very convenient for people or families that like to go on holiday trips, camping, or sailing. As you can never be certain that the water available during your trips away from home is clean and healthy, these portable water filters can guarantee the entire family a supply of safe drinking water while travelling locally or abroad.

Under Sink Filters

Under sink filters serve the same purpose as counter top filters but they are installed and attached to water pipes underneath the kitchen sink. Having the water filter installed under the counter frees up counter space, but as they are fixed, they are not portable like counter top filters.
Faucet Water Filter
Faucet filters are very specific compared to point-of-entry water filters. These filters are directly installed to a faucet of your choice, and instantly remove water contaminants before the water comes out of the tap. However, if you would prefer that all the water supplied to your home is filtered then it is still advisable that you install a larger filter on the main water source entering the home.

Shower Water Filters

Chemicals in water do not only pose a health threat when we drink water, we are exposed to hazardous chemicals when we bath and shower too. Chlorine is a common chemical used to sterilize water. Most water supply companies use chlorine to deliver safer water to people. However, chlorine can be very harmful to the eyes, hair, and skin, and is associated with cancer and asthmatic conditions. During a hot, steamy shower, chlorine in water transforms into chloroform gas, which can cause various respiratory conditions and fatigue to people who are exposed to it. In addition, when chlorine mixes with other organic matter content in water it can transform into disinfectant byproducts or DBPs, which can be highly toxic to humans if they enter the body through inhalation or absorption. The effects of these DBPs may vary from weakening, to permanently damaging, almost all the systems in the body such as the respiratory system, the cardiovascular system, the nervous system, the renal system, and the immune system.
Shower filters are highly recommended for every household in order to remove chlorine and other hazardous contaminants present in water to prevent health issues associated with chlorine and its byproducts.
